  • 22O YARD Hurdel RECORDS

I have been researching the records for the 220 yard hurdles for my college records, and have limited information. Could anyone guide me to a internet source that has a list of world records for the event, and a written history of it. I find alot on Owens and his 26.6 in 1935,and Sime 1956 who ran for Duke.

It gets doubly complex because the race was sometimes run on the turn, sometimes on the straight, so there were 2 sets of records.

Strictly from memory, I think the last straightaway record was 21.9 by Don Styron. Think that bested Sime's 22.1. Charlie Tidwell may have had the last turn record at 22.5 or 22.6.

Then, on rare occasions, this length of race might have been run in Europe, but at 200 meters, probably always on the turn, creating even more confusion due to the shorter distance than 220 yards.

Again, this is all just memory, and you're looking for something more definitive.

Your right about the last straightaway record of 21.9s by Don Styron.
However, there was a time of 21.8s recorded for Forrest Towns.

        King,

Something's not right here. The body of that bio casually mentions that "21.8" in winning the SEC crown. I suspect it's a typo and should more like 22.8 ? 21.8 would have been a fabulous WR,and even if wind aided would have been great. But there is no mention of anything, just the time listed. Not ringing true.

        Time for some research........
