  • Unanswered Trivia Questions

    Who was R.E. Merritt ?

Previous hint: teammate of Ted Nelson at a Texas school
New Hint: Had his picture in T&FN along with Ted Nelson and other teammates

What jersey did John Gutknecht wear when he won the AAU 6 mile in 1961 ?

Hint: this information is available in a certain monthly magazine that most of us read

When Duke won the ACC One Mile Relay in 1960 who were the team members ? One of them set an AR several years later.

Question has been 1/4 answered with Cary Weisiger who set an AR in the 1500 a few years later.

Hint: None. The other 3 were just good college runners although one of them did win the ACC 880 that year I think. (Weisiger won the mile) Names were not listed in T&FN under meet results, just the team and time. Only reason this question was posted at all was to give one member of that quartet a possible brief bit of fame...and it is not me

    Re: Unanswered Trivia Questions

There are others with unconfirmed answers or unanswered questions-Per and his stretching question for example. I guessed Deak.

      Re: Unanswered Trivia Questions

It was Gordon Pirie who asked the question, Have you ever seen a racehorse stretch?

It was Bob Richards that Ben Hogan used as an example in his book "The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" Track personalities were obviously more known to the public in Hogan's day.

Dan O'Brien used a jav with a 90meter rating in his best javelin throw in Atlanta in '96.

        Here's my unanswered trivia question:

Which 2000 Olympic champion finished 2nd in a competition in 1987 in which a world record was set? What was the event? (hint: it was a very different event from the one in which the athlete won Olympic gold)

No, it's not Zvereva. With Privalova, you're on the right track... just not quite there yet... that's all I'm going to say for now :-)

And yes, it is definitely T&F.

                  Re: Unanswered Trivia Questions

Meanwhile, I have another one: when did it happen that a WR in one Olympic event was broken twice in one day, in two different countries ? What was the event and who were the record setters ?

Nice guess, but... no. They were on consecutive days, and I believe Eberstadt and Rehlingen were both in West Germany. Plus Mogenburg only equalled the record, while I specifically used the word 'break'.

I told you I thought I was only luke war...

same deal in the 1500 when Jungwirth broke a one-day old record, I know that was a day later.

I could research the answer but that's no fun... eager to find out what's correct.

Ewa Grziecka held women's jav wr for about 35 minutes on 6/11/72. They probably hadn't even popped the champagne, when news came that Ruth Fuchs added almost 8 ft to it..

                            Yup, that's the one :-)
Gryziecka set her record in Bucharest and Fuchs in Potsdam. The interesting thing is the old record had lasted for 8 years (a very long time by the standards of the day).

I'm still waiting for an answer to my other question (2000 Olympic champion finishing second to a WR in 1987).
