My first thought was that they were both Sullivan award winners, but Johnson's didn't come until 1960. My second guess is this; They both qualified for the '56 team in two events, Richards in the pole pault and decathlon, and Johnson in the long jump and decathlon - but Johnson withdrew from the LJ due to an injury.

Anyone have oly trials decathlon results from '56 and '52? I'd like to know Sam Adams' results from those meets.

He turned out an incredibly fine ale in '52, but switched to later for '56, feeling lighter in his older years.

Sam Adams finished sixth in the '52 FOT deca with 5920 pts when 6804 placed third and fifth in the '56 FOT deca with 6884 pts when 7054 placed third.
