Re: Who is the greatest FIELD athlete ever?

Difficult to limit it to 10. What of Dallas Long,Charlie Dumas, Cornelius Wanderam, Mike Powell,Heike Dreschler and Bob Richards?

Be interesting if someone had the time to tally the votes on some of these T & F opinion lists and list the Top Tens. We did it on a basketball research group list as the last century ended, and it's still online.

I agree that Joyner-Kersee is one of the best athletes ever, and certainly one of the US's top four ever. Having said that, Rafer accomplished a great deal on the track though he cannot match her for number of Olympic appearances- but he lettered in college basketball as did she, and lettered in college football. Jackie may still get the nod, for had there been major league women's pro basketball in the US in 1980, she could have played and done well.

I can't go 10 deep intelligently (being a runner) but I offer up my top 3:

      1) Oerter
      2) Bubka
      3) Lewis

If Carl's Indy LJ was legal in 1983 I'd have moved him to #2, but Bubka's numerous WR's can't be overlooked.

Bubka, then Lewis over Oerter... Oerter was amazing but he was a great competitor more than a dominator of the event. Saneyev is right up there but not Willie Banks... how can anyone rate Willie over Jon. Edwards ?

There's another board that's more appropriate for your ignorant comments above, it's called letsrun.com. Steve is without doubt one of the most knowledgeable posters here and your insults merely show yourself to be an idiot.

Re: Who is the greatest FIELD athlete ever?

I find it inappropriate to criticize the many posts naming Saneyev one of the premier field athletes ever by mentioning his nationality in the post. What has that to do with it? I'm also offended at the aspersion that he drinks/drank excessively. While you have every right to object to his ranking, let's limit our comments to what these greats did on the track and in the sand.

                  I vote for Bubka.

I've heard that Bubka has run a 10.5 100 meters. With that in mind, could he have competed as a world-class decathlete?

Great speed, Obviously strong which is a good combination to have in the throwing events, it would come down to his endurance in the 1500 and his form in the hurdles.

Bijan ( and Mark ) , I think this "satch" is just some guy having a little fun at my expense, nothing more than that. Doesn't bother me. And as to his "rummy" adjective, that's a colloquialism for "rum dum", or someone that is not important. Don't think it has anything to do with alcohol.
