    These work better.
Those don't do her justice either. There was a photo in a '72 Olympics book (I'm pretty sure I bought it from T&FN) that made her look like a Norse Goddess and I was mightily smitten by her when I was in college . . . sigh . . .

Did anyone know that Monika's son was a member of Berlin's 4x200m sprint relay team that won the German Indoor Championships a few years ago?

      Does anyone care?

      I guess not.

        Why do you say that?

It was a reaction to Mennisco's earlier slurs and his usual GDR-bashing, although the post in question now appears to have been pulled (thankfully).

I'm sure you're the life and soul of every party, Rob, but sarcasm is not your forte.

Gohr caught a flying start in that meet, which was not recalled by the starter - hence her 1.5 meter margin over Ashford.

                Whatever you say, hot shot.

I've read a lot of your posts since you joined here, and with respect to your views of the DVfL squad members, well.....du hast wirklich keine Ahnung.

But you're not the first, and likely won't be the last, so carry on if it pleases you.

Are you saying Gohr did not catch a flier?

Of course, when you're 19 years old, 5'9" and 155, there's a lot things bigger than that....
You should read the comments of Charlie Francis in "Speed Trap" about his impressions of the GDR women at that meet...absolutely hilarious!

I remember the meet well . I was 14 then and remembered the dual meet in karl marx stadt the previous year televised by ITV sport . That was when I first watched Calvin smith (probably his first major debut outside of the US) run a spendid 9.91 with a 2.1 wind I think and then an equally impressive anchor to overcome a big deficit and pip the east german runner. From that day on I was a big calvin smith fan.
Back to LA however it was a disappointment to see smith finish 3rd in 10.40 behind king 1035 and schroeder 10.39. In the 200m myricks got the better of smith again 20.54 to 20.76 after finshing third behind myricks 20.03 and 20.13 at the us champs where Lewis ran that remarkable 19.75.
I think smith had already run 9.93 a week or so earlier to break hines record.
Thankfully smith was back in form for the rest of the year .
I cannot recall this meet ever being held again.

Smith and Ashford set their records the following week at altitude. Smith's performance in the 83 meet was a disappointment after 82, when he was in fantastic form; the 9.91w and the relay leg ranked with pretty much anything Lewis was achieving in this period.

In 83 Gohr got a good start, but there was no recall and there seemed nothing wrong with it. Ashford went after her but tied up; I think she later admitted she'd overstrided.
