    Re: Your favourite all-time athlete?

I appreciate the sentiments above re: Oerter and Ryun, and also have an enormously high regard for Ron Clarke and Herb Elliott. But I have to go with Haile Gebrselassie.

I admired Jim Ryun for his ability to compete at any distance 800m. to 10,000meters cross country.
He visited Fort Riley a couple of years ago, and I shook his hand.

Voted (above) for Jim Ryun, favorite male, and my favorite female is Joan Benoit-Samuelsen. What a gutty, courageous lady! She's still running under 2:40:00 and is very involved in promoting distance running.

You’d really have to be a hard core fan (or old) to remember Tommy Fulton and Reggie MacAfee there two of my all–time favorites.

Hey, Reggie McAfee was straight out of Cincinnati Courter Tech in 1969 (I believe). He used to hold the old Cincinnati record of 4:08.5 (converted) for the 1600m. I believe he wound up at UNC and became a sub 4min miler.

Wasn't Tommy Fulton the NAIA guy who was good from the 880 to 6 miles?

I agree with Brumel 100%. Now where do us high jump fanatics get pics and videos of him in action?

                              >>UK...Steve Ovett because of the way he raced, attitude
                              >>towards authority and the fact that he threw up in my bath
                              >>after Seb beat him in 1980.

                              >Mark, some day, some where, we are going to drink some beer
                              >so I and others can hear ALL your stories !

Ovett and Thompson are hard to split. I remember Ovett denying the press interviews and consequently getting slagged off about his bad attitude. However he rarely (ever?) denied the fans. I used to run in meets down in Brighton and once he was there just hanging out with the nobodies.

Another meet I met Thompson who was hanging around the track. These meets are really low standard (Southern men div 5) it's not like there was any good reason to hang around.

Maybe I'm wrong but even as superstars they were both very down to earth.

Hard to narrow it down but if I had to pick one:

                                Seb Coe

Watching Coe was one of the reasons I got into track seriously. His WR 800m is forever etched into my brain.
