Is it any wonder that Pele went by Pele?
His real name was Edmond something about 20 miles long.

    Actually -

Edson Arantes do Nascimento - not so bad

By the way, what's the SHORTEST 'single' last name
    (family name) in the Olympics?

There have been 6 Olympic athletes with a single letter for the last name, as follows:

    E CHN FEN F 1992
    U HKG SHO M 1984/88/92
    O PRK ARC F 1980
    O PRK BOX M 1992
    O PRK TTN M 2004
    O PRK WRE M 2004

There have, however, been numerous athletes who thought their last name was "I"

Among track & field athletics only, there have been 92 athletes with a 2-digit surname, 53 men and 39 women, broken down by nation as follows:

    Women
    CHN 26
    HKG 2
    KOR 3
    MYA 1
    PRK 2
    TPE 4
    VIE 1

    Men
    CAM 1
    CHN 24
    HKG 4
    JPN 3
    KOR 4
    PRK 1
    SEN 3
    SWE 1
    TGA 1
    TPE 7
    VIE 4

By the way, what's the SHORTEST 'single' last name (family name) in the Olympics?

Esther Rot (the world class Israeli hurdler) was just three letters, but I'll bet there were some Ng's in there too from Vietnam. Any SINGLE-lettered last names?

The longest full names among track & field athletics Olympians:

Johannes Antonious Constantinus Marie Grijseels NED 1912
Charles Ernest Whistler Christopher MacKintosh GBR 1924
Odair Pericles dos Ramos Jesus da Costa Baia STP 1996
Rohan Handunpurage Pradeep Kumara Fernando SRI 2000/2004
Antonio da Cunha Meneses Martins Abrantes POR 1988/1992/1996
Alexander Dalglish Neilson Breckenridge USA 1960
Antonius Marinus Hendricus Maria Dirks NED 1992
Hermanus Ricardus Johannes Schulting NED 1980
Antonius Franciscus Cornelis Toscani NED 1936
Hendrik Mattheas Michael van Rappard NED 1920
Theodore Stanley Richardson Wheeler USA 1956

A few accent marks omitted above for ease of transcription.
I could do the women, but that gets somewhat convoluted because of married names.

OK Garry or whomever, name a famous T&F athlete whose name , first and last, was only 5 letters.

Too easy for you Garry plus you do not have amateur status.
