  • 1968 Franklin Field AAU meet

On June 15, 1968 there was an AAU meet, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia some type of championship, probably some regional type championship. A friend, at age 24, entered in the shotput as part of the Philadelphia Hawks team. I was wondering if anyone knew what I could do to get some type of results from that meet for the shotput ... part of a Christmas present.

        Phila. AAU Search

Oldshotputter, You might have some luck with old clippings from the Phila Bulletin sports pages. Clippings and film from the Bulletin might be found at Temple's Urban Archive Collection as stated here:

The Urban Archives holds three newspaper clipping collections donated by Philadelphia newspapers. Lists of topics and personal names are not available for any of these collections. Call the Urban Archives to have subjects or personal names searched in the clippings files. REQUESTS FOR RESEARCH ASSISTANCE BY PATRONS ARE LIMITED BY URBAN ARCHIVES STAFF AVAILABILITY.
George D. McDowell Philadelphia Evening Bulletin Newsclipping Collection
Clippings in this collection are primarily from the Bulletin with some articles from the Inquirer, Daily News, Record, Public Ledger and North American as well as a few articles from New York papers. There are approximately a half million clipping envelopes. Some of the files were converted to a microfiche format by the newspaper. Other files have been copied onto acid-free paper. Files are divided into separate alphabets for subjects and personal names. Clipping files can include obituaries but not death notices and dates range from 1920 through January 1982 when the Bulletin closed its doors.

Records deeper than the top finishers might be found by tracing sources of the local AAU clubs that were active in 1968. The Penn AC was one such prominent club.

I have little archive experience, but I imagine there are others on this board who have had experience searching Phila area archives. Good luck and to assist others, you might post back any successful search avenues.

Thanks for the suggestions, re: Temple, etc. I think the sushi route may be the ultimate solution.

Rules of that era required regional championships, then a rarity, to be held "at least two weeks" before Nationals which in 1968 were on June 20-21 in Sacramento.

So the June 15 meet in Philadelphia may have been the 1968 "Middle Atlantiic" Association Championships in which men's shot was won by R. Haynie with put of 53 feet, 10-1/2 inches. [Source: 1969 AAU Handbook]

For further details, with the meet date known, it's relatively easy to get results from the sports section of microfilmed daily newspaper of the next day (16 June 1968, when such results would likely have gotten good display and space).

Such microfilm is commonly available in university libraries, and the film reader is usually connected to a coin-operated printer for making hard copies. Such libraries, which I've used 20 years for gathering results, tend to have many newspapers from their own states as well as major city newspapers from adjoining states plus "national" newspapers such as the New York Times. Ideally you would visit a Pennsylvania library.

That may not help. Pittsburgh in in the Three Rivers Association, not Middle Atlantic. The latter includes Philly, Harrisburg, and Penn State.

                    correct spelling

It's Monkiewicz and Landreth, both teammates of mine at Father Judge HS in Philadelphia, and then at St. Joe's. "Monk" was, I believe a '68 college grad, Rory class of '70... also Penn Relays HS shot winner in 1966. We were all teammates of Vince Papale..."Invincible".
