  • Bay Area Track Trivia

We were star sprinters at San Francisco City College, almost 20 years apart. We both became exciting NFL halfbacks. Who are we?

I had the impression that Matson went straight from George Washington High to USF. Did he really spend time at CCSF?

Nobody's told me whether I'm right or wrong about Ollie Matson.

You're correct. Both O's also played some time with their hometown 49'ers. When younger, they recorded brilliant times for men who did not pursue track year-round.

True enough. But, if I'm right, that's not an "also" thought. Not even the same highg schools. If I recall correctly, Simpson went to Galileo.

At the Modesto Relays in 1952 they staged a special quarter mile. Matson won, a prelude to his third in the Olympics. I remember Art Rosenbaum's lead in the Chronicle: "They stopped the clock at 46.9 on Ollie Matson tonight."
