You're correct. Both O's also played some time with their hometown 49'ers. When younger, they recorded brilliant times for men who did not pursue track year-round.

True enough. But, if I'm right, that's not an "also" thought. Not even the same highg schools. If I recall correctly, Simpson went to Galileo.

At the Modesto Relays in 1952 they staged a special quarter mile. Matson won, a prelude to his third in the Olympics. I remember Art Rosenbaum's lead in the Chronicle: "They stopped the clock at 46.9 on Ollie Matson tonight."
