the HJ comment was facetious. The best athletes other than Decathletes are PV'ers. Abilities needed are strength, coordination, and speed... which basically is everything.
I posted my answer before I saw tafnut's. Aside from the 3 intangibles he so accurately mentioned, he listed the same "big 3" that I did of speed, coordination, and strength. I doubt anyone will end up disagreeing....
A different spin! A high school teammate of mine competed in both the decathlon and pole vault in the Olympics. I remember he came back and said that after having worked out w/ athletes from all over the world he was most in awe of long jumpers.
QUERY; IS 300 LB SPer who throws 70 better athlete than 200 lb who throws 65? IMHO SPRINTERS best athletes. As for bringing race into it Ill do asIdarn well please!
Since Long Jumpers can jump in addition to sprint they must be better athletes than sprinters.
People like Ewell, Stanfield, Lewis, Burell come to mind.
What's wrong with Pole Vaulters having gymnastic abilities? That's a big plus in my book.
That was tongue in cheek, right? The gymnasts I know are THE BEST overall athletes I have ever seen. I have a girl in class who does gymnastics and I asked her how many pull-ups she could do. Her reply, "I don't know - we only have to do 50 in warmups." The quickness, coordination, timing and strength involved boggles my mind. I begged her to PV, but that seemed too 'limited' to her.
