  • Jewish track & field athletes

I'm doing some research for my own interest. I'm looking to acquire photos, newspaper articles on any great former pre-1970 Jewish Track & Field athlete.

Contact me at [email protected] & I can postal mail you the massive list.

    Thanks.

The list of great post-70s Jewish athletes starts w/ Edwin Moses, of course.

Class Clown tried to goad me into this game a few weeks ago (when the "Irish" thread started), but now he has made it impossible to resist.

He and I (and a few others) used to keep an informal "All-Jewish" team, consisting of athletes like Ulysses Cohen, Glen Cohen, Don Cohen, Ike Levine and other black athletes with surnames often thought of as "Jewish names." None of these guys, as far as we knew, was actually Jewish. Nor is Edwin Moses, of course. Nor is . . .

OK, now that everyone knows the rules, you can all play.

On a serious note, ask your librarian for The Encyclopedia of Jewish Sport. The main libr, MLK in DC has one. Off the top of my head, names such as Marty Glikcman come to mind.

Google "Jewish athletes", there are some HOF's and books. Also check Maccabiah Games rosters.

Irena Szewinska (nee Kirszenstein) was probably the greatest ever athlete of Jewish origin.

Supposedly Jim Jacobs was a high school sprint champion in the 100 yard dash. Jacobs later won 9 straight handball world championships and managed Mike Tyson.

Which reminds me that Franklin Jacobs was one of the stars of the "All-Jewish" team.
