  • Adelphi University Indoor 11 lap World Record

I'm looking for info/links where I can retrieve specifics regarding Adelphi University's 11-Lap indoor world record mile relay of 1972.

Hoping some of my fellow track fanatics can assist. Thanks.

        Dear Curtis,
The splits given were fairly accurate for
both world records. The 3.12.2 should have been
at least a second faster as I was knocked off the
track twice by other lead runners. After the CYO
meet teams knew that the only way to beat us was
to keep us from finishing thus all the pushing.
The secret to both races was a comfortable lead
going to the second leg allowing all three legs
to go all out without fear of being caught. All
of us were from the New york/New Jersey metropolitan area. We had a great coach in Ron Bazil. Happy New Year to track fans everywhere.

Not trying to burst bubbles, but I guess I will anyway. The Philly Track Classic mark is probably short of one mile, at least according to the story I've heard.

This was the first year that the PTC had a new ProWest track, 11 laps, steep banks. When the track was broken down at one end for the sprints and hurdles, the banked sections were stored temporarily in the concourse.

At the end of the straight events, the work crew dragged out the banked sections and proceeded to piece the track back together.

But that piecing together took an inordinately long time, setting the meet behind schedule. After finally jimmying the banked sections into place, the remaining events were run off.

At the end of the night, when the track was broken down for storage, the carpenters found out why it had taken so long to put the track together: one of the pieces hadn't been brought back out.

My guess is that along the curb, a banked section of that track was about 2-3 yards long. Multiply that by 11 and you have a track suddenly short by some 20-35 yards.

I remember hearing all the hoopla about the times
being so much faster at the classic then in the cyo meet. To the best of my knowledge that was a
theory which was not proven. The record is something to tell the Grandkids about and I'll
stick with the 3.12.2 without an asterek.
