one of the subject I like to read the most is "all time best". While many posters view their opinion on the subject, none explain the criteria according to which athletes were ranked and in some cases the list seems to be biased according to one's favorite athletes and nationality.
In this post I have tried to create a scoring method that will ranked athletes according to their performance. The method is ranking athletes according to two major criteria:
Annual ranking according to time/mark, and success in major championship.
I do not take into account the level of performance for two reasons: first it is the hardest to formulized, secondly and more important the level of performance is sadly not only influenced by the athlete's ability but also by the era in which he compete and the drugs that were at the time.
That mean the MJ will get the same points for winning 95,96 WC and OG as KK that won in 00,01.
I started the calculation in 1981 and only the top 8 in each event are reported. However if an athlete makes it to the top 8 and he competed also before 1981 his point will be added to his total. For example Moses points from 1976-1980 will be added to his total since he is ranked on the top 8 in the 400h based on his post 1980 performance. In the next post I will present the scoring method in details and the other will give the results for all men event except the marathon and walks.
The scoring system:
Athletes will score points if:
a) They ranked in the top 8 at the annual list (based on their time/mark). Athlete will get 10 points for being ranked in the first place, 6 for second and than all the way to a single point for being ranked in the 7/8 place.
b) They ranked in the top 8 in an Olympic games, World championship, and world cup in 1977-1981.
An athlete will get 20 points an Olympic gold medal and 14 for being first in WC or world cup.
As athletes in the 80' have two major championships less than those since 1991 the scoring method will create a biased towards the more recent athletes. In order to solve this problem I created "virtual championship" in which athletes were getting score based on their performance in the year the virtual championship held and the previous two years. For example in 1985 no major championship held, thus athletes were ranked according to their performance in 1983 (WC) 1984 (OG) and their ranking in 1985. A Similar method was applied for athletes that their country boycotts the Moscow/LA Olympic.
In the next three posts I will give the results for each event and overall.
