Who Am I...? (trivia)

My name contains several pairs of letters... the letters that feature twice spell out the name of an oriental alcoholic drink.

In my main event, I broke the national record four times and was in the same race where the current world record was set.

However, my greatest acheivements (and continent records) were set in a different event. Any guesses who I am...?

I am not smart I guess. I must confess I just reviewed every male and female Commonwealth winner in 1982 and 1986, and there were no first names that rang any bells for me !

Steve - there was no mention of a Commonwealth title. (That was on the other 'Who Am I').
