Living on the edge award - trivia question

This field event performer barely qualified for the finals on his or her 3rd and last effort in morning qualifying.
In the finals, he/she did little on his/her first two tries, then had a better effort to sneak into the final eight and get 3 more chances. Then he/she improved dramatically and won bronze by a tiny margin over two other competitors. All this happend at a OG or WC in the last 8 years.
If this is too hard I will provide hints.

I don't have the details of JJK in Atlanta handy, but I don't recall her having difficulty qualifying in the morning.
Satch obviously knows the answer and doesnt want to spoil it...

It sounds like JJ-K in the Atlanta L.J. where she jumped 7m and finished very close to Fiona May.
I think there was a Greek woman close behind her.
But was there problems in the qualification?

The answer is Arsi Harju (Finnland) at the 2001 WC in Edmonton. He edged Martinez and Peric by 2cm for bronze, after barely surviving on his 3rd throw in morning qualifying and in round 3 of the finals.
