    Just got the new Sports IUllustrated. Was gratified to see that Cliff Cushman was named as one of North Dakota's 5 greatest athletes.

    Another great BIG 8 runner who could DO many events Think he won his State meet team title all by himself and was 2nd in Olympic 400H

      I hadn't been aware that Cushman was lost in the Vietnam War. Seems unbelievable that he died almost 40 years ago. What a shame.

        TV commentator Dick Bank wore Cliff Cushman's MIA bracelet for many years; maybe he still even does.

            Thanks for posting gh. He was my first track hero when I was a kid. When he was shot down over Vietnam and never found, it was very sad. Someone should tell his life story in a screen play. If he hadn't been such a great all-around athlete, he might have been the first Jim Ryun -- the guy whose reconds Jim Ryun broke. His talents in the half and mile probably exceeded his talents in the hurdles. Not likely anybody else has ever almost set a national HS record in the mile playing football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and training for the 120 highs in the spring. But put him in any race, and he would find a way to get to the finish line first. A guy who just loved to run fast -- any distance, with or without barriers.
