I've told my Houston McTear story before.....oh well!
There I was sitting on those hard Radcliff Stadium bleachers at another edition of the famed..."West Coast Relays"...from Fresno. As I checked out the infield with my binocul.....what????????.....you're kidding....Houston McTear!!!!!!! Yep he was there to run on that Cerritos JC 4x2 team. A world class sprinter anchoring Cerritos JC...ha! The strange trip was that it was as if he was just another JCer out there. Nothing about him at all. Nobody seemed to notice him......yet
Moving ahead....
At the final exchange of the 4x2 there was McTear..wwayyyyyy...back there, totally out of it. Or was he? Like a shot out of a cannon here he came. He was passing those JC anchormen as if they were standing still. Yes that old familiar...wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! !!!!!....as the crowd came to their feet. Needless to say he won the race for Cerritos even cruising those final 10 meters or so. I'd like to say the PA announcer....
"Ladies and gentlemen......Houston McTear!!!!!".......but he didn't.
In my opinion, McTear and Bob Hayes were the two fastest humans who ever walked the face of the earth, talking "naturally" fast, meaning if nobody ran track then they ran a race.
Both from Florida.....hmmm?

Cute story.
I lived in California back in that era.
The jerk that brought McTear to California owned racehorses, as did I, and I knew him for what he was--a Mr. Big Shot type that was mostly flash.
McTear was an amazing raw talent.
He definitely had the makings of another Tyson Gay if handled properly."Who's Kidding Who?"
