  • Whatever became of Andre Phillips?

I'm just curious to know whatever became of Andre Phillips, the 1988 Olympic 400m Hurdles champions from the U.S.. I never read of any noticable results from him after the '88 Olympics, or of any other involvement in the sport. I might just be uninformed and clueless, but I'd just be interested to know what he's doing these days, if anyone knows? What was his last season of competition?

If you click on "Rankings" at the top of the page, you can find the archive of T&FN World RAnkings, which would tell you that he ranked No. 2 in the world in '89, but then never again. You'll also see that he started ranking in '80, so he had a 10-year career, which is exceptionally long.

Many athletes quit after winning Olympic gold, because in an achievement sense, there's nowhere left to go after that.

1989 also goes down as one of the most dismal years in U.S. track history in terms of public interest. Nationals at Houston (famous self-serving Carl Lewis "boycott") were horrid (and next year in Norwalk wasn't much better). That was in the days before the World Champs were every two years, so after '88, Phillips had to face an '89 and '90 with no international-championship meets. That he chose to retire isn't at all surprising.
