I think there was a Russian in the 80s who could make it work.
While trying to research the topic, I ran across this about Dick Fosbury. It looks like he was diagnosed with cancer but is probably ok.

He set Outdoor and indoor WR's in 1978 at 2.34 and 2.35 (7-8 and 7-8 1/2). That was 10 years after Fosbury jumped 7-4 1/4.
The floppers regained the WR in 1980 when Wessig jumped 2.36 at the Olympics.
There were other great straddlers at that time like Rolf Beilscmidt who jumped 2.31 in 1977.
But please, don't mix up the Western Roll and the Straddle. Two different but related techniques.

Holm plays with it sometimes. He's done 2m and his version is very primitive.
I think his Straddle best is still 2.06.
done 2.05 in the straddle (assuming that this is ``dykstil'') and 2.00
in the californian roll. Do not ask me what ``rakhopp'' and ``Holm
volt'' are.

Holm shows all these + the Holm volt on YouTube. Search "6 degrees of jumping-Stefan Holm"

Yashchenko was quite possibly the greatest HJ talent ever. I'm not sure why he didn't use the flop, BTW - he was born in 1959, so by the time he started training seriously, that technique would have been the generally accepted standard. And of course it's a huge shame his career was destroyed by alcohol - he didn't do anything of note after 1978, when he was just 19...Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...
