1960 gave us close 100m and 400m races between the USA and GER. Each race could have gone either way. Though I never saw him run in person I feel like I was there as I have that one ubiquitous image imprinted onto my minds eye, Kaufman leaning desperately from lane 2 while Otis eeks out the win. If ever there were a second place that was at least a "1.4" place it was Kaufman. He looks like such a perfect athlete, a real mega talent. I have no doubt that a Kaufman and Davis in 2008 would fare no worse for their efforts.
May his family love his memory as much as we, even those of us that have written hagiographies on this site for Otis Davis, loved the greatness of his olympic talent and effort.... nothing really ever changes my friend, new lines for old, new lines for old.
