First vaulter to vault his own age

    I believe it was Paul Wilson who went 16' 0 1/8" in '64 as a junior at Warren HS in Downey. He was born 30 July '47. The most times would fall to Sergey Bubka, born 4 December '63, who vaulted 14' 5 1/4" in '78, 15' 9" in '79, 16' 8 3/4" in '80, 17' 8 1/2" in '81 and 18' 2 1/2" in '82.

Absolutely Brilliant, and so quick, too. I can see I am going to have to try much harder.

May 23 1964, California Relays, Modesto CA

Jim Ryun cruises to 3rd in the mile with a fantastic 55.7 last lap to beat Bobby Seaman, John Camien and Cary Weisiger and place 3rd in 4:01.7. Meanwhile, at the pole vault pit, 16 year-old Paul Wilson clears 16' 0"/4.87 at his second attempt to become the first person in athletic history to pole vault his own age in feet.

Let's turn the trivia around, here's an easy one. Of some of those guys mentioned above:

Where did Camien go to high school ?
Where did Weisiger go to college ?

            Marlow,

In the universe I inhabit, 1964 comes before 1969.

Well, he's just expanding on the 16 at 16 to also tell us 17 at 17.

I don't know where that California Relays clipping came from, but it has nothing to do with Paul Wilson's first 16' vault. The vault occurred at the CIF Southern Section semi-finals at Compton HS on Friday night, May 22. I had just purchased my ticket for the upcoming Compton Invitational and was getting used to the hard wooden seat I would occupy two weeks later (when Ryun ran 3:59.0), about 60 feet from the vault pit, when Wilson cleared. He had been over 15-7 three times previously, but this was still a major surprise.

The answer for Camien is the high school attended by a four time Gold Medalist (same event.)

The answer for Wiesiger is found in your moniker. [That's OK, I like Cal (East Bay) trivia.]

I'm dubious. Wilson was one of the greats, too bad injuries cut his career short.

But how do we know that some 11 year old didn't jump 11 feet sometime before 1964? I seem to recall a couple of 7th graders -- 12 or 13 year olds -- who could vault 11 feet with old metal poles. And they didn't seem like the world's greatest athletes, just wiry, strong, little, tough guys. Seems entirely possible to me that some wirier, stronger, littler tough guys somewhere might have done so at age 11.

What were Warmerdam's pr's by age?

How about the oldest to vault his age (in feet) ? Might be a few who have done it, but the highest of them (age 19) did it at the Texas relays. While we're at it, how about the oldest to vault his age in decades/feet..! Hint:
it's the father of a former world recordholder in the vault.

I don't think Warmerdam ever did it.

                            Age records: http://dominique.100free.com/

Casey Carrigan allegedly did it every year from around age 9 to age 17, but if he really did it at those younger ages it was never documented. I think they had a pit in his backyard, so probably there.

Corey Shank's dad said this awhile back:

"Corey started jumping at a very early age in the back yard landing
on an old gymnastic mat. He actually started putting a pole into a
hole dug in the ground when he was two years old. He jumped his age
                            at ages 5 (5' 7"), 6 (6'6"), and 7 (7'0") but then found soccer and
baseball and took a couple years off. "
He sent me documentation to prove it all too!

And, why not vaulting one's age in decimeters? Happened this year, by a 47-y-old, in Ft.Wayne,Indiana......
