The same can be said of former NFL linemen. The stresses of 20+ yrs of heavy lifting to accomplish what he did takes a tremendous toll on the body, and he may genetic disposition to the ailments he has anyway.

it would only be sad if it were not true, and as a corollary Oldfield in a chair is bigger than most Oly. gold medalists.

In 2006, the Chicago Tribune visited Brian and reported on his ailments:

Starting in the early 1990s, Oldfield's disabilities piled up at a frightening clip. His right leg became severely infected after surgery, putting him on antibiotics for 17 months. A fusing spine ate away the strength in his upper body, while neuropathy, a nerve disorder, weakened his legs.

As his body deteriorated, Oldfield tried to make the switch to coaching but was ill suited for its administrative tasks. He halfheartedly earned his real estate license but never sold a house, saying with rueful sarcasm: "I don't like talking to people. It's beneath me."

He's still showing up at throwers conventions, tho:

He was at one of the Oly Trials years ago (either '88 or '92) looking like he was already 80 years old--he had very large leg or knee braces and was walking like he had gotten screwed up pretty bad, somehow...
