  • Best HS Sprint Relay Team You Ever Saw?

Mile or 440- either one- what was most impressive schoolboy or quartet you peeped in person (or competed against)? West Indians included.

Did anyone on our boards see Dallas Lincoln's John Delley, Joe Pouncy, Rufus Shaw, Gene Pouncy in the late 1960's? Cats ran a nat'l record 40.2 in the 440 relay.

Jasper, Texas. Hands down. No real track to practice on, and they cracked 40.

1985 Hawthorne 4x400m quartet, anchored by Henry Thomas at any number of meets near CA fans.

The Pouncey's would end up at SMU. Better as high schoolers.

I saw Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt run what I believe was a national record in Lubbock, TX at the Texas regional meet.

I lived in Fort Worth in the 70s, when it was known as "Speed City". it was a popular accolade that O.D. Wyatt could take four guys at random from the hallway and run 40.0.
They moved 9.5 guys to the 800 and 9.6 guys to the mile.

Ok, slight exaggeration but not much.

8-Man Mile Relay --- LA Schoos

During the 1960s, the LA area schools would have several relay meets at which they would contest the 8-Man Mile Relay --- each relay member running 220 yards.

The old Coliseum Relays was the best place to watch from up high. It was literally a 'mad house' - - - four minutes of non-stop excitement.

Not sure when they discontinued it but that event was the most entertaining relay I have seen.

                "8 man mile relay"-
                I hope it didn't take 4 minutes!

Not with Manuel Arts, Jefferson, Los Angeles, and Dorsey High Schools running. They all went under three minutes.
