Not with Manuel Arts, Jefferson, Los Angeles, and Dorsey High Schools running. They all went under three minutes.

8-Man Mile Relay --- LA Schoos

During the 1960s, the LA area schools would have several relay meets at which they would contest the 8-Man Mile Relay --- each relay member running 220 yards.

The old Coliseum Relays was the best place to watch from up high. It was literally a 'mad house' - - - four minutes of non-stop excitement.

Not sure when they discontinued it but that event was the most entertaining relay I have seen.

I lived in Fort Worth in the 70s, when it was known as "Speed City". it was a popular accolade that O.D. Wyatt could take four guys at random from the hallway and run 40.0.
They moved 9.5 guys to the 800 and 9.6 guys to the mile.

Ok, slight exaggeration but not much.

Did anyone on our boards see Dallas Lincoln's John Delley, Joe Pouncy, Rufus Shaw, Gene Pouncy in the late 1960's? Cats ran a nat'l record 40.2 in the 440 relay.
The Pouncey's would end up at SMU. Better as high schoolers.

Jasper, Texas. Hands down. No real track to practice on, and they cracked 40.
