  • Texas Relays photos circa 1957

I was browsing through a collection of historic Texas photographs, and came across these three that y'all might find interesting:

    http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/SUM200 ... -19616.tkl

    http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/SUM200 ... -19617.tkl

    http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/SUM200 ... -19615.tkl

These shots, of course, were inside of U. of Texas' Memorial Stadium, now Darrel Royal-Memorial Stadium, back when it had a track. Since 1996, the Texas Relays have been held in the new Mike A. Myers Stadium next door.

So who is the unknown man who appears in all three photos? And who are the rest of the people in the javelin photo?

Not a quiz; inquiring minds want to know!

Could that be a young Baldy Castillo holding the javelin? (guy next to him looks like Viggo Mortensen!)

Good bet. And the guy squatting might be Don Canham?

In the third picture (Greg Bell), could the guy in background be Bob Gutowski?
If that was the NCAA (at Austin in '57, where Bell won), it might be the day he topped Warmerdam's WR?... (unofficially, as his pole passed under the bar).

...And is that Ira Murchison in first photo? And the UCal guy is probably
easily identifyable, but that was before my time...
The one in the middle looks like a European running coach.

In the second photo, the guy on the right, is it Chuck Coker?

There are captions for the photos; that's Murchison & Leamon King

You must have missed the caption on that page. It says:

Man shaking hands with Greg Bell. Standing to the right is Bob Gutowski. This photo shows 1956 Olympic Long Jump champion Greg Bell being congratulated after his NCAA win in Austin on June 14, 1957 (where he produced the then second longest jump ever - 26'7"). To the right (standing) is Bob Gutowski, 5th in the event. Next day Gutowski broke the World record in the pole vault with 15'9 3/4." Other athletes and track stands in background.
