  • The long jump & 110's & the NFL

So who are those 25 footers plus/sub 14.00 hurdlers that made it to the NFL? I will mention two guys who didn't reach 25 but feel thay need to be mentioned. Gale Sayers and Lynn Swann both had leaps of over 24 feet as high schoolers. Swann twice winning Cal State. Sayers jump was a long standing Kansas state record. I'm thinking 24-10ish..???

    Anyway...

    Bo Roberson...Cornell/Raiders...1960 Oly silver medalist
    Paul Warfield...Ohio State/Dolphins & Browns
    Ron Jessie...Kansas/Lions & Rams
    J.J.Birden...Oregon/Chiefs
    Champ Bailey...Georgia/Redskins & Broncos
    Mel Renfro...Oregon/Cowboys
    Terry Metcalf...Long Beach St/Cards
    Terdell Middleton....Memphis/Packers
    Latin Berry...Oregon/Rams
    Dokie Williams...UCLA/Raiders
    Johnny Hector...Tex A&M/Jets
    Chris Sanders...Ohio St/Titans
    Vance Johnson...Arizona/Broncos

    Those at 27ft and over....

    James McAlister...UCLA/Eagles & Pats
    James Lofton...Stanford/Packers & Raiders
Eric Metcalf....Texas/Browns.....he would be the king with his 27-8? leap

Still not sure why Renaldo Nehemiah couldn't make it in the NFL. Would you believe the Niners actually had him run a 40 for them? Ah...why? I read (so????) he ran a hand timed 4.1. Let's just leave it alone...ok? Will never figure out the timing in a 40. Bob Hayes was running 4.4.

    Anyway....

    Renaldo Nehemiah...Maryland/Niners
Bobby Mitchell....Illinois/Browns & Redskins....he started out as the Browns halfback beside Jim Brown at fullback. Talk about thunder and lightnin"...damn!!!! For some reason he was traded..??????
    Bennie McRae...Mich/Bears
    Reyna Thompson...Baylor/Giants
Fair Hooker...Arizona St/Browns.....gotta love that name.
    Quadry Ismail...Syracuse/Vikings
    Ken Margerum...Stanford/Bears
    Jim Johnson....UCLA/Niners
    Gene Washington...Mich St/Vikings
    Jerry Tarr...Oregon/Broncos
    Earl McCullouch...USC/Lions
    Rod Woodson....Purdue/pick a couple
    Tyrone Wheatley...Michigan/Giants & Raiders
    Willie Gault....Tenn/Bears & Raiders
Mel Renfro....Oregon/Cowboys....a 25-10/13.7/9.6 guy. Stud running back in college.
    Richmond Flowers...Tenn/Giants & Cowboys

No doubt I screwed something up and forgot a couple, so feel free to help me out.

Lynn Swann won the California state high school long jump once. That was 1970. Not many have won two state titles.

Gayle Sayers went to high school at Omaha Central and spent his youth in Omaha. His brother Roger was a 20.6 or 20.7 , 200 meter runner.

Swann and Stalworth, talk about great memories. Lynn was absolutely one of the 5 most graceful receivers of all time.

Add Lance Alworth to that short list.

Anyone ever see a guy named Margene Adkins catch passes?

25 long jump and 14 high hurdles

where does Olympic champ Glenn Davis fall into this mix? He played for the Lions in the early 60s. I know he was 49.1 IH , 45.7 440y, and anywhere from 24 to 26 feet LJ but don't know his HH time but it had to be decent as his sprint times were 9.6/10.3.

A 9.6 won't get you much if we're talking sprinters and the NFL. So what did he jump? If over 25 feet he belongs. If we're talking the 400 hurdles he'd be in with...Nolan Cromwell, Bennie Brazell, Paul Robinson as guys who ran that event and were also NFLers.
