  • Trivia ! Continuity on the Medal Stand

    From 1948 onward, in Mens' individual events, there is one event where, from one Olympics to the next, there was a repeat of at least one person on the medal stand that was also there 4 years earlier, for 7 Olympics ! It happened in 5 Olympics in only 2 other events. Is this too hard to understand ?

    Now don't just go look it up, that's cheating. All you wonks that have all medalists memorized should easily get the event with a continuity of 7. Bonus points for the two at 5. And super bonus points for outlining the continuity strings.
    Remember, no cheating !!!

    To say again, a repeat of at least one person on the medal stand that was there 4 years earlier... never 3 brand new people compared to 4 years before.

        That goes double satch. Men's decathalon starts in '48 with Bob Mathias to himself to Milt Campbell to Rafer Johnson and the link breaks there...so that's five.

        Starting in '52, the shot put has Parry O'Brien to '56 O'Brien, '60 O'Brien, '64 Dallas Long, '68 Randy Matson, '72 George Woods...but I can't link '48 to '52 and I ain't gonna look it up.

        I have to write this down 'cause I'm getting confused here.

          cullman, you are really good at this stuff. The SP is indeed the event. You did not list the full thread sfor 1956 through 1972 but it's obvious you knew them... Matson's 2nd in 64 links to himself in 1st in 68, and WQoods had 2 seconds, in 1968 and 1973.

          There is a thread from 1948 to 1952 as well. Anyone ?

          The other 2 events that had threads of 5 Olympics were.... ?

            and Cullman, Decathlon is not one of them... 1948 to 1952 to 1956 to 1960 is only 4, not 5 as you said. But to repeat, you are GOOD at this stuff.

              '56 - Tsybulenko;
              '60 - Tsybulenko;
              '64 - Kulcsar;
              '68 - Lusis;

                And is the other one the men's DT...? (amazingly, during the same years as the medallist continuity of the men's JT!).

                '56 - Oerter;
                '60 - Oerter;
                '64 - Oerter;
                '68 - Oerter;
                '72 - Danek

                  Re: Trivia ! Continuity on the Medal Stand

                  OK...I'm good at remembering names but lousy at counting. I even used my fingers and got confused. Unfortunately, I started from 1972 and worked my way backwards...which really screwed me up....so the link for part two of the question has to be continuous from '64 back to '48. What a waste of great names like Golubnichy, Pamich and Kulcsar. Got confused and included women too. Back to da drawing board.

                      Then there is Discus with Oerter's 4 ending in '68 and then Danek in '68 and '72.

                            To make official, Jon got it first, for DT and JT.. amd somebody back there got Fuchs for 48 and 52.

                            Good work all of you. I know, it was stupid.
