Thanks! I always like to look at the picture from the US-Germany dual meet from '38 with a super relaxed looking Malott hitting the tape in the 400 about 4 meters ahead of a more strained looking Harbig.
-
Malott was indeed a great talent. In his senior year, 1938, he was near unbeatable, even by Harbig. Dink Templeton went to the point of setting up special races for him that year to try to break the world record. But no luck. I'm sure I saw some of those (as well as the regular Stanford dual meets), but memory grows dim.

All I know is that he seems to have retired at age 21 (after the '38 season) + he comfortably beat Harbig in '38 over 400.
He seems to have had Harbig like speed in the 200 and he could also run the 800.

110 Hurdles. I would subsitute Milan Stewart for Sam Turner. I always thought Milan's '82 NCAA win in the rain is one of the most under rated performances.
My opinion:
If conditions had been dry Gault wins - Stewart won because he was more determined not because he was the fastest.

There are no other schools with that quality/quantity in those events I mentioned, that rivals USC/UCLA. TCU has a ton of sprinters but where's their long jumpers/hurdlers? Baylor has a truck load of quartermilers but what else?
