  • Born in the Capital

You know Eddie Tolan was born in Denver (Colorado's capital). This athlete won an Olympic gold medal (Track & Field) and was also born in the capital of a U.S. state, but not Denver. This athlete is no longer alive, but would be 98 on her next birthday. Here is a hint: There was a bit of controversy over her Olympic gold medal win. Which athlete are we talking about today?

    I'll say Stella Walsh.
I'm editing 2 minutes later... on second thought I believe Stella was born in Poland, and had Anglicized her name.

Instead I will say Jean Shiley ( think that's it) as she beat Babe Ditricksen(sp) in the HJ in LA in '32 as Babe lost a jump that would have won for "diving."

Stella's controversy was of a much more basic nature....

Very good dukehjsteve. It is Jean Shiley. Jean was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania over 97 years ago and she did win the Olympic high jump in Los Angeles in 1932. I believe Jean died about ten years ago.
