Very good dukehjsteve. It is Jean Shiley. Jean was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania over 97 years ago and she did win the Olympic high jump in Los Angeles in 1932. I believe Jean died about ten years ago.

I'll say Stella Walsh.
I'm editing 2 minutes later... on second thought I believe Stella was born in Poland, and had Anglicized her name.
Instead I will say Jean Shiley ( think that's it) as she beat Babe Ditricksen(sp) in the HJ in LA in '32 as Babe lost a jump that would have won for "diving."
Stella's controversy was of a much more basic nature....

Born in the Capital
You know Eddie Tolan was born in Denver (Colorado's capital). This athlete won an Olympic gold medal (Track & Field) and was also born in the capital of a U.S. state, but not Denver. This athlete is no longer alive, but would be 98 on her next birthday. Here is a hint: There was a bit of controversy over her Olympic gold medal win. Which athlete are we talking about today?Tags: None
