  • Another Capital, Another Gold Medal

Eddie Tolan (Denver), Jean Shiley (Harrisburg), Mel Pender (Atlanta), Millie McDaniel (Atlanta), and Alonzo Babers (Montgomery) all won Olympic gold medals and were all born in state capitals.

Only three hints for our next capital born gold medalist: 1. He was born in one the state capitals listed above. 2. He did not win a gold medal in a field event. 3. He won his gold medal when Ronald W. Reagan was the U.S. president.

    Who is this mystery athlete?

Educated guess, by process of elimination, and ignoring Relayist-only guys, I will say Roger Kingdom... and he did it twice while Reagan was President. Plus, he went to Pitt, so maybe he was born in Harrisburg and stayed in-state.

Here again, this is the kind of question where you either know it, or you play the eliminate-then-guess game.

edit to add: Well, I have re-read the question and since it is all written in the "singular medal" mode it probably is not the K-man.. but I'll stick with it.

Roger Kingdom is a very good guess, however he was born in Vienna, Georgia. Here is a fourth hint: This athlete won his gold medal in an event the U.S. also won in Beijing.

Well I have to quit, as after I guessed Kingdom, I looked up a few, to no avail. So I now know who it isn't, but not who it IS !

Why eliminate relayist-only guys? It almost has to be one.

Because I do not know all of them, and was too lazy to look up who they were !

OK, here's another hint: Don't eliminate the relay.

Slowcat does it again. Yes, it is Antonio McKay. He ran in the open 400 and won gold in the 4 by 400 relay. He was born in Atlanta. Nice work, slowcat.
