To get the ball rolling I'll say Sotomayor's 2.25 in Sydney.

this is a neat question. I do not have the faintest idea, but whenever the answer is disclosed I'll be interested in finding out. Would be interested in the same deal in the PV.

I am really at sea here too. But did not Steve Smith have an outrageous opening height a few years back when he was injured?

Not Smith (clue: heading in right direction). I do remember him coming in at an unbelievable height in a final when he was injured but he failed. I think it was 2.36 but can't remember where or when.

PS...what's the norm for giving the answer? I don't read these trivia threads very often coz they're usually about Americans I've never heard of. When Jon shows up he'll get it and I don't want these young Brits to get even more full of themselves!

Dalton Grant 2.32 at the 1997 WCh. The previous record also belonged to him - it was 2.31 at the 1991 WCh.

Smith entered--and failed--at 2.35 at the '99 Worlds in Seville.

Yes to Dalton! In 1991 his season best was 2.30 prior to the WC. He came in at 2.31, made it, passed 2.34 then made 2.36! Still finished 4th.

                            Lol!

After you said that Steve Smith was 'in the right direction', I had a feeling that it would be Dalton. But I didn't have the stats available to confirm it.

                            Great question, though!!
