  • Best Penn Relays distance "anchors"

Some names that come to mind:
    Joe Falcon
    Don Paige
    Sydney Maree
    Mark Belger
    Leo Manzano
Anyone have any stories of these runners and other memorable Penn relay anchor battles to share?

    Thanks.

Has anybody ever compiled a woo-index list? I'm guessing Larry James '68 still rates near the top. And Nehemiah from what, '78?

I'm a bit partial to Mike Stahr. Come from behind (pretty decent gap too) to win and team sets WR DMR. Video is online at the You2b

Agree. That's one my favorites. Plus that video has the great booming voice
of the great Penn Relays announcer Jack O'Reilly who describing the relays leg of each time. I've watched that many, many times.

Sorry for the typos. I meant to say "....describing the relay legs of each team...."

I have no specific memory or knowledge, but I am inclined to think that Ron Delany had a few good ones.

Some of those Villanova anchors were so far ahead when they got the stick that the anchor legs were not very exciting or memorable.

                  Nobody has mentioned Marty Liquori?

I was at the 1958 Penn Relays ( as a 15 year old) and saw Delany run a 3rd leg, quarter mile, on a mile relay. But I do not rmember where Villanova finished.
