    Good article on Dorothy Doolittle (first winner of the women's division of the Chicago Marathon, later U.S. Oly coach) at http://www.statesman.com/sports/content ... b0064.html

    Mistakenly refers to Frank Shorter as the last American to win the Olympic marathon (that, of course, would be Joan Benoit), but otherwise, a really good write-up.

    And then lets not forget Mark Plaatjes win in the 1993 World Championships. Not the Olympics but a big day for US marathoning (although commonly overlooked).
