  • Best High School Facilities

I live in California and have seen a lot of high school track and field facilities. I realize this topic could go under "Current Events", but I decided to put it here because I want to know past and present. What is the best high school track and field facility you have ever seen?

I got to thinking about this because so many high schools in my area now have all-weather tracks. It is almost unusual to see a dirt track, although I know many schools still have them.

So, what is the best high school track and field facility you have ever seen and what makes it the best you have ever seen?

A couple of schools come to my mind. Trabuco Hills High in Southern California and Sammamish High in Bellevue, Washington. I haven't seen Sammamish High in about twenty years, but twenty years ago in was beautiful. What makes these schools on my list is nine-lane all weather tracks, great infield for all field events, nice scoreboards, and plenty of seating for fans. I'll admit I haven't seen Trabuco Hills High in about ten years, but I do remember it as a very good facility.

At the time, James Logan had (one of) the best facilities in Northern California... perfect all-weather track; astroturf infield; digital scoreboard.

St Anthony's HS in Huntington, NY added a mondo track outdoors 2 yrs ago. This coming year, their 200 mondo indoor facility will open. Its a multi-sport complex to serve much of the PE dept too, so there are lots of locker rooms and class rooms as well. I think they're the only HS in NY w/ their own indoor facility. Should make it easier to remain the SI top HS program in NYS.

Folsom HS in Folsom CA, where they hold the Golden West Invite, has a sweet-looking 10-lane track. My old high school just this year replaced the dirt track I ran on 35 years ago with an all-weather track. I have yet to take a look at it.

It's a track without a curb, and the sprints generally run into the wind. At least they have during the GWI, which has been held in the evening in mid-June.

My high school has an awesome track:

This picture is before they resurfaced the track last summer. The words indicate how the meet will be set up for the Masters Combined Event National Championships this summer.

It's cut into a hill and pretty much surrounded by trees, so wind is minimal. We have wonderful temperatures all summer, and there is lots of shade on the rare hot day. My problem as a coach was usually that I was too cold (even in the summer).

Interesting info MJR, because although I have lived in Indiana for almost 40 years , I grew up in Huntington and went to Huntington HS. But are you sure St. Anthony's is in Huntington ? I thought it was in Smithtown. But maybe I'm mixed up. And if it is in Huntington, where exactly is it ?

They moved the campus from the old Smithtown location in the mid 80s so they could go co-ed and have more space. They're on Wolf Hill Rd, just off the Northern St Parkway now. That old campus was torn down after rotting for about 15 years and sold to a developer who made it into some high priced condos or something of the sort. The new location was originally Holy Family HS. You can see the new place here: http://www.stanthonyshs.org/

Carpinteria High School - small school, small stadium, fine track facility in a gorgeous setting at the base of the foothills of Los Padres National Forest and a mile from the Pacific Ocean.

Indoors, I immediately think of the Lavino Field House at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. It's more than 50 years old, but I believe it's still a fine facility.

Home of Coley Candaele, age-group wonder and future Louis Quintana-beater -- er, state champion (4.06).

St Mary's High School in Berkeley has a wonderful, three-straightaway 400m track, but the facilities are no greater than any other school.
