  • Arne Andersson has passed away

One of Sweden great middledistance runners from the mid-40 has past away at a age of 92 years (April 1). Arne Andersson was best know for his great duels with Gunder Hägg (they met 23 times, Andersson won 9 of them and in 9 of the 23 competitions ended with a WR).

Andersson broke 4 WR between 1942-1944.

His best time was the 4:01.6 he run the mile on in 1944.

    RIP.

Another great of yesteryear passes on. The duels between countrymen Gunder and he were truly inspirational, since (1) they raced frequently - unlike Coe and Ovett and (b) they took turns in winning - unlike Elliott and Lincoln. In the climactic mile race in 1945 in which Arne gave up at the end and lost lost by six yards or so, he had a starter's cartridge stuck in his right shoe (?) spikes. Did this affect the outcome of the race and the eventual degree of fame given to each runner?
    RIP.

Very sad. A great, great athlete. I was privileged to shake his hand in 1994.
