No need to apolgize. You simply spoke a greater truth than you knew..

No. He set an OR, though.

He set the WR earlier that year in Bydgoszcz. His OR run was a minute slower.

    >Jon,

That may be true, but surely that 'excuse' would only be of some use if
    >it were to dispel a performance set at an OG, which was only recognised as a
    >World 'Best' and not a Record?

It does not help the converse case, and to my
    >knowledge, neither a World Best, nor a World Record has ever been set in either
    >(any) of the walks at an Olympic Games, and we now have recognised WRs in these
    >events, so the question must still stand...

I completely agree. I was just trying to pre-empt what some picky people may give as an excuse.

I can envision the reply now....

"The walks records were world BESTS and not world RECORDS"....

bf is right. The discus is the only men's event where a WR has not been set in the Olympics.

    >>Men's 50km walk...?

Jon, I think you're right - This site's record page
    >indicates that Abdon Pamich (Italy) broke the 50km Walk WR at the Tokyo Games,
    >but I think this is wrong, as it was only an OR.

Yep, it was only an OR. Pamich set the WR in 1960 (4:03:02), but only finished 3rd in the OG that year.

He then went on to win the '64 OG in 4:11:13, even though by that time, Mikhail Lavrov had lowered the record to 4:00:50.
