The correct answer for the first African American to win an individual event I believe is DeHart Hubbard in the LJ in 1924.

For fun go back and see "Chariots of Fire" for the 47th time, and look at the scene where they show the US team having a practice. They have a lone African American in the background long jumping. Wonder if that was intentional ?
