  • All-time favourite track & field photos

Picking up where the other discussion (from the Karlsruhe thread) left off, just wondering what are people's favourite track & field photographs...?

Bannister and Beamon seem to be popular choices. Any more? They don't necessarily have to be arty and/or emotive ones - could even be pics that just make you laugh! If you can also find a link to a version of the photo online, then even better!

    Here's links to Beamon:

Personally, I love this picture of Allyson Felix, taken by photographer Peter Reid-Miller:

I know it's not an action shot, but I wonder if he intentionally shot Allyson in the same way he did Perec:

It's almost as if he's trying to say that Allyson will be Perec's successor as the next great 200m/400m female sprinter.

There is a picture in the IMAGES of '92 issue of Sports Illustrated of Carl Lewis in the relay in Barcelona. Carl is in full flight with nobody else around. It is taken from the side and partially from the back and is the most stunning picture I have ever seen of a sprinter. It is om page 76 and I always have it around.

The photo of Ron Clarke in a viking helmet on the cover of the '66 annual edition of T&FN.

Few will remember this but T&FN used to put out a photo collection at the end of the year in the early 70's - maybe only Oly years - but the '72 version was awesome. Anyway, in that collection is a picture of Bruce Jenner finishing the 1500. He was kinda skinny at the time and no one would have guessed he'd be the next WR-holder/Oly champion. Anyway (again) the expression of effort on his face has stuck with me for over 30 years and when I'm tired of training I remember how he gave it all that day and I keep working. That's my favorite track photo.

Silly me - can't be the pic, as it's the end of the 100m and not the 1500m!

too many great shots to pick from. But for 'capturing the moment', hard to beat the one of javelin throw (Brian Chaput) in Jan.TFN. Another super shot was of Petranoff ('83?), with javelin bent like a banana as it left his hand.

For me, it's gotta be Brumel kicking the basketball hoop... a close second is Brumel clearing a new WR, 7'5 3/4" above the sand pit in front of the home crowd in the USA/USSR meet.

Of many, my favorite Brumel shot was SI's from '62 US-SU meet - he's on the way up, and you wonder how he's gonna get his whole self over that bar.(and capacity crowd, of course) The rim-kicker is classic shot, but couldn't many HJers have done that? I remember, in h.s., touching my living room ceiling (9'+?) with lead foot, one evening when my parents were out, and I piled all pillows&cushions in the house for a landing.Don't think my folks ever noticed the toe prints. (Yes, inspired by the Brumel photo). Rim was how high??

                            Yes, too many!
Who can forget the shot from the last turn of the OG 5000 in Helsinki in '52 when Zatopek, Mimoun and Schade has just passed Chataway who then falls to the track.

true - the 1980 Coe shot can't be beat. The Walker 3:49 wr is another great gut-straining finishline photo.
