        Dave got it.

Per was "close," in the sense that Fuchs succeeded Fonville as the world shot put record holder and did so in a the "big" USA v Scandinavia meet held in Oslo in '48.

Fuchs beat a fellow high school sprinter in the Illinois state meet 100yd dash who went on to have a fairly good sprint career…

I'm guessing you're referring to Charles Peters in 1945.

I was also "close" in the sense that I actually lived not that far from Oslo when Fuchs set the world record. Mathias and Bob Richards saved it for the U.S. in the last two events. All kinds of superstars on the U.S. team, Stanfield, Whitfield, Ault, Charles Dickson. Richards had the highest Pole Vault of any American in Europe to that time at 4.50m.
But the meet was in 1949 not 1948.

              Dan:

Right again. I was referring to Chuck Peters, who completed well beyond high school, including being a teammate of Fuchs in 1949's "the greatest track meet of all time," (see my next thread) where he was 2nd to the great Stanfield in both the 100 & 200m dashes.
