                  I have found C.S. Cochran that was twice NCAA champ for Mississippi State in 1922 and 1923, and their school colors are maroon, but if indeed this is the correct answer I do not "get" the "mystery man", or the "nautical", or the "catcher", or the mention of "Vandy". I will guess that this guy went in to be a Commodore in the Navy in WW II or something like that ?

                    I get it. The nautical reference is to C.S. Forester and the catcher is Mickey Cochran.

                      By the way, Satch, the SEC was not formed until 1933, so Cochran was not a 400m SEC Conf guy.
