  • 99 Years Ago Today

This gold medal winning athlete was born in Los Angeles 99 years ago today (Tuesday). He died about 19 years ago in Fullerton, California. He not only won the gold medal, but he also was part of two world records in his event. Naming this athlete might be tough, so can you name his event?

Would it help if I told you he went to Stanford University?

    Must be a relayist, either 400 R or 1600 R. I'll guess 400 R.

Alright dukehjsteve. You got it. It was the 4 by 100 relay in Los Angeles (1932). Most of you probably know who anchored this team (he was from Glendale). Our birthday athlete is the man who gave the baton to the anchor. Which Stanford sprinter ran the third leg on this world record setting team (40.0)?

Not necessarily. Everyone on this relay team went to a current Pac-10 school except one runner. Next qustion: Name that one runner.

double r, you're piling on... now you want TWO names ??!!

ok, we all know Wykoff was the anchor, and 3rd was your Stanford guy, plus either 1st or 2nd leg was also from PAC 10 school.

OK, I'll slow down a bit. Here are some more clues. The world record setting 4 by 100 men's relay team at Los Angeles in 1932 was led off by a runner from UC Berkeley. He gave to a sprinter from Loyola University of New Orleans. Third leg was the Stanford man and anchor was the great Frank Wykoff of USC.

The man who won the gold medal in the 1948 London 100 meters has the same initials as the Stanford runner on leg three.

I won't ask for the names of legs one and two.

The lead-off was Bob Kiesel, from Cal.

My first response was a clue: "Hell, I should know this!"

Very good, dj. Yes, the first runner was Bob Kiesel. The third man was not named "Hell" but rather Hector (Hec). You were fairly close.

A google search finds this in 10 seconds. But I would never have guessed it without looking it up.
