I can't recall hearing him referred to by that moniker, but I did not attend SJ State.

I Googled "grey ghost" and "Tommie Smith" and came up empty.

                      Hal Davis went to Cal.

There is a famous book " La Fabuleuse Histoire
de l'Athletisme " from the French specialist
(now he is 75 years old) Robert PARIENTE.
He met several times through the sixties Tommie
SMITH and his coach Bud WINTER.
He had been the bible of track in the newspaper
                              L'EQUIPE for at least 40 years .
As he is living in Paris, I shall call him to
make sure Tommie was nicknamed "the grey Ghost".
Which is written in his book.

Where in the book? I just took a quick look and couldn't find it. Nor do I ever remember him being called that.
