  • How Well Would Pre and Rupp Have Trained, Raced Together?

Suppose, for a moment, if you will, that Prefontaine was able to be fast-forwarded to modern-day time, with as close to similar circumstances today as he had back then, and had both the ability and the opportunity afforded to use it under the guidance of either Vin Lanana and/or Alberto Salazar.

If he'd attended Oregon between 2005-2009, and was graduating this season following a red-shirt 2008, he and Rupp would have had five outdoor track seasons to work together, with four on the collegiate level.

    A few questions:
    1. Would Pre have been a faster runner now than then? He'd be following in the wake of Webb, Ritzenhein and Hall.[/*:m:3rprtek5]
    2. What kind of times would either athlete have pushed each other toward during that stretch at 1.500m, mile, 3.000m, 5.000m and 10.000m? [/*:m:3rprtek5]
    3. Would Rupp have trained with the team rather than with Salazar (or, conversely, would Pre have trained with Salazar as well, and not with Lanana)? [/*:m:3rprtek5]
    4. Had they of raced each other last week in the 5.000m (I assume Pre would have raced Fernandez at 1.500m), would the fast-finishing kick that Rupp dropped on the field have been enough to hold off his teammate?[/*:m:3rprtek5]
    5. Which one of them would have won the 3.000m and 5.000m at this year's NCAA indoors?[/*:m:3rprtek5]
    6. Would Pre and Rupp hold the 5.000m and 10.000m collegiate records?[/*:m:3rprtek5]
    7. What would the Oregon indoor DM winning time have been?[/*:m:3rprtek5]
    8. With Pre replacing Kiptoo-Biwott, what would Oregon's 4xMile time have been? (not taking Pre's 1960s PB, but today's guesstimate at what he could have run)[/*:m:3rprtek5]
