Re: Decathlon trivia
Steve: yes, the question is what you think it is.
Actually, I have to admit I'm not sure if my answer is correct... The guy I'm thinking of had a PB of 7692 on the current tables, it could be that that's not the best... I'm pretty sure Richards and Lauer didn't have better scores, though.Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...

Re: Decathlon trivia
The "real" answer is Guy Drut, with a 7524 for 9 events. Huh? He had a PR (old tables) of 7565 in '70; after winning in Montréal he went to Talence in September. In addition to a decathlon-record 13.5 flight of hurdles he jumped 24-9 3/4, 6-7 1/4 and 16-1.
He only needed to run something like 5:10 to break 8000 points but DNFed after getting cramps and experiencing Achilles soreness. The T&FN story at the time noted that he was still a smoker at that point in his career and was exhausted 15 minutes after he collapsed.

Re: Decathlon trivia
Not true - Drut only scored 7261 in Talence in 76 (or maybe it was 7500+ on old tables...) Anyway, whatever he was really worth, his PB isn't better than the guy I have in mind.Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...

It most probably is. My guess is that hurdles, jumps, and vault specialists would be ideally suited to scoring high in the decathlon. I'll try and research into it a bit more, but Kozakiewicz's score will be tough to beat!
