  • Fastest final 10K of a marathon?

I imagine it might be Geb's final 10K of his 2:03:59 WR. But we all know a marathon is a hard 20 mile and then a 10K. Anyone who has a resource for stats on this? It would be interesting to know the 10 fastest 10 K's on the end of a marathon.

    I don't know which sounds more daunting; 20 miles plus a 10K or a 10 K followed by a non -stop 20 mile warm down. .
Either concept makes me wonder why anyone would deliberately run a marathon unless your army had just defeated the Persians or Spartans and you had no cell phone reception.

You'll have a hard time trying to find the 32.195k split in any race. The best that could be hoped for is to find the fastest last 7.195 or 12.195k.

Of the recent WRs, Geb's earlier 2:04:26 actually had a faster finish than his current WR - last 12.195 in 35:30, last 7.195 in 20:48. I suspect, though, there may have been slower and more tactical races somewhere with a faster last section than that.

might have been faster at 2008 Fukuoka (35:29 for 12.195K)

I'm not sure, but I think Tergat might have a good shot at having had the fastest 10K finish.

Gebr failed in his earlier attempts to run the WR at Amsterdam (was right on schedule at the 35km point), allegedly because of the stronger headwind, but I wasn't so convinced. Look at the super finish of Tergat.

But as we know now, Gebr learned the trade.

Baldini covered the last 12.195km in 35'05" at the '04 Olympics. His last 10km were something like 28'20".
