  • Born Today Many Years Ago

This birthday athlete died on Jimmy Carter's 70th birthday. Today (Friday) marks this Olympic champion's 108th birthday. Born in Missouri, this athlete became an orphan at the age of ten.

This track and field athlete won the California state high school championship three years running in two separate events. As the NCAA champion, this athlete competed for USC.

Competing in two Olympic Games, this competitor won three Olympic gold medals, setting two Olympic records. In one Olympic Games, this person carried the U.S. flag (and did not dip the flag).

After graduating from USC, our birthday athlete became a dentist. Anyone know this great Olympic champ with a birthday today?

Nice job, LopenUupunut and happy birthday today to Bud Houser (108 years ago today). Houser won the 1924 gold medal in the discus and the gold medal in the shot put (on his final put). He also won the gold medal at the 1928 Olympics in the discus (again, on his final throw). He set a world record in the discus in 1926.

The high school field at Oxnard High School was named for him while he was still in high school! I'm not sure how old he was in high school, but he was a great athlete.

Houser was born 25 Sep 1901 and was a senior at Oxnard HS in 1922.

High School age limits were looser back then.

If you have ever seen pictures of Houser from his high school days, it is very easy to see that he was a man among boys. No wonder he won three consecutive California state championships in the shot put and three consecutive championships in the discus while at Oxnard High School.
