  • Two questions for the historically informed

    1) I can't seem to find gh's NCAA championships history book in the archive page. Is it still on the site?

    2) A local news article identifies Boni Petcoff as a notable US javelin thrower in the late teens or early 20s. (Also notable as captain of the Ohio State football team in 1923.) If true, to what degree?

He never scored in the NCAA. That's all I can bring to the table.

NCAA compilation will return to the site "soon"

        This site ( http://www.e-yearbook.com/yearbooks/Ohi ... e_250.html ) says:
PETCOFF Boni performed adeptly with the javelin, breaking the state record.

He never scored in the Big 10, Drake Relays or AAU Senior or Junior Champs.

Thanks. I figure if he's unknown to both DJ and GH, his accomplishments have been overstated.

And here's the quote from the first story sited: "Petcoff was far better known for his athletic career at Ohio State, where he also was a national javelin throwing champion, for his coaching and playing career during the early days of the NFL, and as a Toledo physician and surgeon."

He was not a national champion. He never placed in the Big 10, the
Drake Relays, nor the national AAU Sr or Jr champs.

Breaking the "state record," i.e., the Ohio State school record, might have been pretty good for Columbus, but as no Ohio Stater had ever scored at their conference meet since the event was added in 1916, I find it a stretch to think that he was "national class."
