    Re: Trivia

Yes he was built like either Herb Washington or Mel Pender.

    Re: Trivia

How about Mel Pender since I've never seen a picture of Murchinson.

    Re: Trivia

John Gilbert was black. A short powerful guy built along the lines of Ira Murchinson.

All I know about him is what I've read. Is he white or black?

    Re: Trivia

John Gilbert was an undersized but bullet fast track and football sensation as a prep at Santa Barbara High School. After that he ran very very quick sprint times for a couple of years but had financial, physical and emotional problems that cut short his running career. If you go to newspress.com and search the archives section there is an informative column about him that I remember reading several years ago in the Santa Barbara New-Press. I think it will cost you $2.50 to download the article.

    Re: Trivia

Brutal, your question on John Gilbert. I believe he graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1960 and then attended Santa Barbara State(now Univ. of CA at Santa Barbara) but did most of his running for the LA Striders

Make that 20.8 not 20.4 for Gardner

    Re: Trivia

    Nope still kicking.

I was thinking of Eddie Tolan who ran 10.4 4 times in a row between July 31-Aug25 1929.

I was also thinking of Jamaica's Keith Gardner who in 1958 ran

    9.4
    10.3
    20.4
    46.3
    13.8

To make the top 10 list in all of those events.

Stone Johnson was the first Grambling Olympian beatting Stebbins by 4 years.

Would you happen to know what college John Gilbert a world class sprinter from the early 60's went to? I can't find this to save my life.
I'm beginning to think he didn't go the college.

    Help!

    Re: Trivia

Hey Brutal, I thought you packed it in!
    I'll go with Dave Sime
    Jim&Rafer Johnson
    Lon Myers
    Jimmy Omagbemi
    Alvin Kraenszlein
    Dick Stebbins
By the way Darrel Brown will win the 100 in Athens.
I knew that was going to be your next question.
