  • WR range

I have two questions (I don't know the answers):

    1) Who had the widest range in terms of WR's at one time and during a career (i.e 1500m and marathon)?
Male and Female. (also interested in similar question but for antional records)

    2) Who (in the modern era - since 1896) has held their WR at a continually held Olympic Track & Field event for the longest? Male and Female.

      Re: WR range

An interesting question since anyone who held a marathon record and ANY track record has the greatest spread in terms of miles. If that is the criteria then Finland's Hannes Kolehmainen might qualify with a WR in the 5000 of 14:36.6 and a best in the marathon of 2:32:35.
Both Paavo Nurmi and Sandor Iharos held WR's at 1500/5000/10000.
      Nurmi 3:52.6, 14:28.4 and 30:06.2
      Iharos 3:40.8, 13:40.8 and 28:42.8
In 1884 Walter George held records at one mile (4:18.4) and 10000 (31:40).

The 10,000 was a non-distance in W.G. George's time--that's almost certainly a time for 6-1/4 miles. He held the amateur records from one mile to 10, if I'm not mistaken.

Ingrid Kristiansen at one point held the WRs in the 5,000m, 10,000m and the Marathon (between October 1985 until September 1993).

            Re: WR range

A clarification on W.G. George. According to the 1885 record lists, he held the fastest amateur time for the mile (4:18-2/5) and for 11-1/2 miles (59:51-1/2) and, of course, a ton of distances in between. However, at that time, the "WR" for the mile was the pro mark of William Cummings (4:16-1/5) and a number of the "WR"s for the longer distances were also pro marks (for example at 11 miles: 56:52 by Deerfoot; 57:09-3/5 by George).

Grete Waitz had 3K & Marathon, but not simultaneously ('76 and 78, but lost 3K record in 76)

Kratochvilova's 800, coming up on 21 years. Longest span of WRs might be Koch/400m - from July '78 to present. And for men, Syedikh?(May 1980--)

                    Re: WR range

so is my original answer of Owens' 26' 8.25'LJ from 1935 to 1960, slightly over 25 years, still holding up as the possible correct answer ?!

It is, but the original question required "uninterruped OG's".

No, he said "continually held Olympic event"; (whatever that means....)

There was a gap between 83-85 when Koch didn't have the WR- Jarmila's 47.99 in 83'WC
